Medicaid and Managed Long-Term Care
Managed long-term care services in New York are available for those over the age of 65 and younger people with disabilities or chronic illnesses who do not have sufficient income to pay for the care they need. All of these plans accept Medicaid. There are three types of managed long-term-care service plans in New York.
Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)
PACE organizations provide comprehensive healthcare services through an interdisciplinary team of physicians and other care providers. PACE is available for individuals who are at least 55 years old and are otherwise eligible for admittance to a nursing home. Note that you must live in an area serviced by the plan, and once you join, you are required to use the plan’s providers. This usually means changing doctors.
Managed long-term-care plans
Managed long-term-care plans provide long-term care services to individuals over the age of 65 (with a few exceptions). With this plan, you are entitled to keep your primary physician while taking advantage of the following:
- Home healthcare, including nursing, physical therapy and home health aides
- Access to specialists, including podiatrists, optometrists and dentists
- Health daycare and social daycare services
- Personal care, including assistance with bathing and dressing
- Other services, such as grocery shopping assistance, home-delivered meals, transportation to doctors’ appointments and emergency aid
- Nursing home care
Medicaid Advantage Plus
Medicaid Advantage Plus provides all of the services of the managed long-term-care plans and offers Medicare services as well, including hospital stays, mental health services, chiropractic treatments, X-rays, prescription drug benefits and ambulatory care.
